Practical, source-linked guidance
A plan you can inspect before you spend.
This guide organizes business and equipment questions; it does not replace advice from a lawyer, accountant, insurer, regulator or qualified clinical professional. Requirements vary by province, municipality, treatment and professional scope.
Choose technology for the intended use
Diode, alexandrite, Nd:YAG and intense pulsed light systems are not interchangeable. Evaluate the device’s licensed indications, operator controls, wavelength or filter configuration, spot size, pulse range and the client population you intend to serve. Marketing claims should never replace the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
Treat cooling and ergonomics as operating factors
Contact cooling, air or other thermal-management systems affect operator workflow and client experience. Test handpiece weight, hose movement, screen clarity, repetition rate and room power requirements during a live demonstration. Confirm how cooling components are maintained and what failure looks like.
Match the exact device to MDALL
Obtain the manufacturer, model, device identifier and Medical Device Licence number, then search Health Canada’s active listing. Do not accept a licence for a related model, a manufacturer alone or an MDEL as proof that the quoted machine is licensed.
- Photograph or retain the proposed device label
- Confirm the active record before purchase and delivery
- Recheck if the model or identifier changes
Evaluate training and clinical governance
Training should cover theory, contraindications, consultation, skin typing, patch testing, parameter selection, eye protection, documentation, cleaning, adverse-event response and supervised hands-on operation. The clinic remains responsible for professional scope, insurance and safe protocols.
Price uptime, not only power
Compare expected handpiece life, consumables, preventive maintenance, parts stocked in Canada, remote diagnostics, technician travel, loaners, warranty exclusions and extended-coverage cost. A high headline wattage does not establish treatment quality, safety, throughput or profitability.
Model demand conservatively
Calculate break-even using realistic booked hours, no-shows, package discounts, labour, consumables, payment fees and downtime. Test slow, expected and strong-demand cases. Avoid publishing guaranteed permanent results, universal suitability or promised ROI.
